The Associated Press recently reported that the New York Police Department (NYPD) hired an informant, whose job it was to spy on the Muslim community and ‘bait’ some of them to see if they had extremist tendencies. This obviously is disheartening for the community, that one of our own would violate the trust of the community and spy on us. The Muslim community in NYC has nothing to hide, but, who else is being spied on? Are we suspects based only on our faith? The NYPD’s surveillance programĀ is unconstitutional. You can’t target a race or faith of people based solely on their religion. You can’t ‘bait’ them to do something they normally would not have the inclination to do. You cannot spy on an entire community based on just their faith; it’s just wrong. Not only is it wrong, it’s un-American.
